A little setup.
Then it’s just a key.

Will it run on my Mac?

Linty works on Intel and Apple silicon Macs running macOS 14 or later. One download supports both. Intel Macs use Whisper for dictation and CPU-based text cleanup; Apple silicon Macs can also use Parakeet. Processing speed depends on your Mac, language, and recording length.

How do I install Linty?

Download the Mac installer, open the .dmg file, and drag Linty into Applications. Open Linty from Applications to begin setup. Official releases are signed and notarized by Apple.

What do I need to set up?

English and Right Command are selected automatically. Open Linty, grant Microphone and Accessibility access, and wait for the initial downloads: about 500–574 MB for speech and 496 MB for English text cleanup. Onboarding guides you through the required permissions; changing the defaults is optional. You can change languages and shortcuts anytime, or try a recording in System Check.

Can I change languages later?

Yes. In Settings → Dictation, search 100 languages by English or native name, or choose Auto-detect and save up to three languages you use. Linty reuses downloaded speech support and downloads more only when needed. Your current language stays active until the new one is ready. App menus stay in English; recognition accuracy varies by language.

Does dictation need an internet connection?

Internet access is needed to download speech support, optional text cleanup, and app updates. Once speech support is ready, dictation works offline. Your audio and transcripts stay on your Mac.

Is it free?

Linty is free and open source under the MIT license. No account or subscription is needed for dictation or optional text cleanup.

What if my words don’t appear?

Open History to find and copy your transcript. In System Check, check Accessibility access, then place your cursor in an editable text field and try again. For setup, microphone, or download problems, read the troubleshooting guide.

What if a transcription isn’t right?

Review and edit it in History, add unfamiliar names to your dictionary, and check that your spoken language is selected in Settings → Dictation. Use System Check to try your microphone. Audio quality and background noise can affect results.
